It’s true. In a recent episode of NBC’s comedy Community — which has been enjoying a banner year with the return of creator/demigod Dan Harmon — the world can clearly seen the true beauty and bizarre attraction of D&D.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????If you’re not familiar or up-to-date with Community (and if it’s the former, why the hell not, and if it’s the latter, it’s understandable), you don’t really to know much for this episode. Or even much about D&D. But damn, this is good: a fascinating bit of filmmaking that actually works on at least, what, three or four levels. You won’t believe the interrogation of the hobgoblins or the brave, pathetic death of Joseph Gordon Diehard. No, really.

After you’ve watched it, realize one thing: there’s not an ounce of special effects in this — No CGI, no opticals (well, maybe one beam of sunlight), no make-up — even less than in the first D&D Community episode a couple of seasons back — nothing but clever writing, diabolically good editing, and some remarkable acting (Let’s face it: Danny Pudi is a genius).

Community - Season 5And now think of how wonderful it woudl be if somebody at some down-and-out cable channel produce a weekly series of half-hour D&D adventures just like this: dramatized (and yes, probably pre-written) game play in the same style. That woudl give non-games just a hint of the real romance and power of this damnable way of life.
