into the stormWindstorms. Yeah, yeah, we know windstorms. We saw Twister. What else you got? That’s actually the biggest challenge that Into the Storm faces: taking a horror/suspense movie trope — The Big Storm — and making it scary again.

Consider the shark, and how it has fallen from a source of abject fear in the days of Jaws to an object of fun, if not ridicule.Consider, if you must, Sharknado. Even Jaws feels like a sitcom these days.

So what can Into the Storm do to revive the trope? Get a couple of really good actors, for one thing, and that they did: Richard Armitage, the sexiest dwarf ever, and Sarah Wayne Callies, the sweetheart of the zombie apocalypse. And a director who clearly knows what to do with big, big ideas, like the second unit director for a couple of little indies called Titanic and Avatar. And then you production-design the hell out of it (is that a verb).

The result: We’ll all see it f’real on August 8, but in the meantime here’s a trailer with some of the most suspenseful and just play awesome footage of the summer — and that includes the pyoo-pyoo-pyoo superhero and sci fi flicks of the season. Take a look:

Things get all cray-cray up in here on Friday, August 8. We’ll be there to watch, in one of those special theaters with the seat-belts.
