There seems to be a new one (or an old one re-released) almost every week, and it’s been a long time (Maybe the first Paranormal Activity, the beginning of Chronicle, maybe parts of Last Exorcism or the first part of Afflicted) before the whole awkward, raw, visceral format has shown any real promise. Even one of the good fou-foo franchises, REC, gave it up halfway through #3.
But maybe Mr. Jones can redeem the found-footage approach. At least the premise is a little better than average: it’s about a “reclusive artist’s creepy scarecrow-like sculptures and the ramifications that come with poking around where one doesn’t belong.” Seems that the young pretty couple Scott (Jon Foster, Stay Alive ) and Penny (Sarah Jones, Alcatraz ) moved into a remote cabin just down the road from the reclusive Mr. Jones, and the quickly realized he doesn’t like to be disturbed, and only comes out at night when he drags his strange, sinister sculptures deep into the woods. Then Scott and Penny’s curiosity leads them too close for Mr. Jones’ comfort and … things get weird.
For one things, it seems that “Mr. Jones’” sculptures have an evil effect on people all by themselves:
,,,and that strange allure can affect the snoopy next door neighbors too…
This is first time in the directors chair for Karl Mueller, who wrote the screenplay for Xavier Gens’ dark-on dark The Divide. It will be available for your “enjoyment” when it’s released in L.A. theaters May 2 and on DVD and VOD Tuesday May 6. You can pre-order here. And thanks to Best Horror Movies for the tip-off.
