Continuum has been one of the best of the many, many science fiction and/or fantasy series to come out of the wilds of the land they call “Canada” (accent on the first syllable; it is often mispronounced). Now Showcase, that CaCompany that produces the CaSeries, has announced a final six-episode series to tie up all (most?) of the plot lines and loose ends. And never did a story deserve it more.
It’s a time travel story, and an honest one. No Time Tunnel, maybe, but miracles don’t happen that often. It is, I fact, a pretty serious and surprisingly deep adventure series that offers up meditations on loyalty, civil liberties and even the slippery nature of terrorism itself. And the acting throughout has been pretty damn exemplary, especially Rachel Nichols, who’s had the unenviable task of trying to hold this whole multiple-body, multiple-paradox multiple timeline story together, and Erik Knudsen, who was barely old enough to vote when this whole magilla started, and has had to evolve from callow young genius to cynical and world-weary, teetering on the edge of permanent corruption – and do it convincingly. All that, while surrounded by pro’s like Tony Amendola, the redoubtable Roger R. Cross, and the damn-near-legendary Lexa Doig. (In fact, our only real complaint about this series is not utilizing Lexa enough. We’ve loved her ever since TekWar and Andromeda. Go, Cowgirl!).
So thanks to Showcase for showing the slightly rabid ContinuFans the respect they deserve, and giving us all a foreshorted fourth season. If it’s half as good as the series has been so far, it’ll be well worth it. And it’s coming in early-ish 2015.
Fair Warning: if you haven’t been following Continuum since E01S01, you will be hopelessly confused, no matter how good the recaps. So click here and consider picking up the series from the beginning. And rejoice: you can get Season 1 for a ridiculously low price!
