The slightly amazing cosplayer Mhysa Cosplay has shown off some pretty remarkable looks. And in a recent post on her Facebook page, she gave us a little insight into her creative process…

mhysa cosplay 2“I frequently feel like I have a different approach to cosplay from most of my peers,” she said in her post, “because I come from a theatrical costuming background. I studied fashion and costume design at school for two years before turning my focus to acting. As such, when I approach a character I not only look at the original reference material, but try to interpret how the character would have actually dressed in the historical period they come from. I think of what materials and construction techniques would have been used, and how I can incorporate that while still being true to the design”

A fantastic example of this, she tells us, is her Saber costume from Fate/Stay Night and Fate Zero. “I looked at the design from the anime, and then created it with fabrics, trims, and embellishments that would have actually been used during the historical period the character lived in. For the sake of practicality, however, I did compromise and put in a couple of invisible zippers to get in and out of it, because anime physics.” So yes, she admits, she’s “anal about period accuracy.” Which may explain why these costumes are so damn good.
